Here is the Thesis on which you will write an essay:In his desire to prove that alcoholism was an economic problem for New York, Chipman made 3 major errors in collecting his evidence which led to invalid results: he allowed jailers and poor house managers to determine people “intemperate”, he used data from only six counties, and he did not make complete assessments of other underlying problems with people asides from alcohol abuse.Background information:Samuel Chipman was an ardent temperance advocate who traveled 4,500 miles around the state of New York in the early 1830s to measure the effect of alcoholism on New York society. Temperance advocates had always used a moral argument against alcohol, that it harms peoples’ characters, even their souls. But brewers argued that the sale of alcohol created jobs and economic wealth. On his journey, Chipman talked to county jailers and keepers of the poorhouses asking them about intemperance among the inmates and paupers. He was attempting to collect statistical data to prove that alcoholism caused crime and poverty and cost the counties a lot of money. The New York Temperance Society published the report in 1834.
