In the harsh world of business, every manager is faced with ethical decision making on a daily basis. However, how we react and make ethical decisions is what sets apart from each other. Jim had an issue with the decision that his boss Fred made. This was because a Japanese contractor offered a profitable agreement for imaging satellites. They were also negotiating with two other major companies in competition with Fred. Fred made an unethical decision in order to stay ahead of his competitors. He lied to the contractor about the satellite launch date. When confronted by Jim his response was that it was an industry practice and that all the others were doing it. This raises questions because if Fred is true, then that would mean that the entire industry is full of liars and conduct their business unethically. If that is not correct about the industry it shows his customers that ISI is a company that thinks it is okay to lie to their clients. It is not okay to lie about the launch date. If Fred is worried about winning the contract solely because of the launch date then he could ramp up production and lesser quality. However, if at ISI they promote their quality and thorough inspections, then they can create a competitive advantage over others in the industry. He could explain why the launch date is going to be a little later. Even as easy as setting a range and agreeing upon plus or minus a few months. If I was in charge of ISI I would sincerely apologize to the Japanese and explain to them our enhanced quality control and stringent specifications for modifications and adaptability. It makes us the best in the industry because we do not settle for great we only accept the best. Our launch dates may be a little later but it is because of the immense amount of effort we put into making our satellites absolutely perfect
