The boys in Araby and A&P used different approaches in order to achieve their goals. Although they started differently in their approaches, both the narrator in Araby and Sammy in A&P share many similarities in their pursuit of love. Love made the boys subject to out of character behavior. Both boys’ love for the girls are blinded by their minds and decisions. They are faced with harsh realities due to their actions as their pursuit becomes unfounded. Essentially, the two eventually come to terms with their out of character behavior after their pursuit came to be unsuccessful.In the end, both boys learned valuable lessons. For one, the narrator in Araby learns that love is about what comes from the heart. Unfortunately, buying a gift for a girl does not buy her love. In A&P, Sammy learns that that you cannot predict the future. In other words, Sammy should not have believed that good things come to good people. They both learn that overzealous actions can lead to unsuccessful results. Sometimes when put in effort you do not necessarily know if you are going to get anything out of it. Love has no boundaries and often times it can be blind. They both learned that “You must think before you act” rather than act before you think. In conclusion, the boys learn that it is probably not wise to over-invest in things you are not sure about. In addition to this, misalignment of priorities can lead to disastrous outcomes.
