Assignment Question

It’s a very brief book that’s 90 pages and my prospectus assignment isn’t good so you can revise it into a thesis of your choosing for flexibility.

These are the instructions given to us:

Introduction: Using the prospectus assignment, students can use that paper as a guide for writing a longer paper. This assignment can expand on the prospectus’ thesis (or revise the thesis), give more details on the supporting evidence outlined in the prospectus, and use the research articles (or different articles) as further support for the thesis. Additionally, as mentioned in the prospectus assignment’s introduction, students may elect to simply analyze Jamaica Kincaid’s book in terms of argumentative structure: her thesis, premises, counterarguments, refutations, and concessions. Or students can both analyze the book and offer an original perspective on the effects of tourism on both native inhabitants and those in the U.S. that travel to places of leisure. Importantly, students can use the tools learned so far in this course on how arguments are constructed to write an original essay that uses all or some of the key terms found in the modules. I have kept the modules open if you need to refer back to the key terms.

Assignment Objectives: Students will be able to demonstrate in writing a valid thesis, supporting evidence, and researched evidence to include in an essay. Students also will demonstrate the use of MLA citation practices.

Connection to module objectives: Demonstrate composition skills related to a line of inquiry with a unifying thesis and supporting evidence.

Steps: Jamaica Kincaid’s travel book, A Small Place, paints a satirical picture of life on Antigua, a Caribbean island of her birth, that is not so nice, to say the least. This is an island in which native inhabitants experienced oppressive conditions at the hands of British colonialists for centuries.

Based on the required reading leading up to this essay select one of the follow prompts for an essay: Write an analysis of how the author structures her argument in terms of thesis, premises, counterarguments, refutations, and concessions, metaphor, and, especially, analogy. Additionally, the essay can include an analysis of her use of the 2nd and 1st person perspective (“you” and “I”). In your essay, one by one, argue if Kincaid’s use of each writing device is effective, or if there are problems with her argument (i.e., where she is using too much opinion without support, or even false analogies). If using this prompt, the use of an outside research source is optional. If electing to use outside sources, limit to 1-2 sources. Or Within each of Kincaid’s chapters, the author offers an overabundance of premises (supporting examples) of how the island inhabitants are exploited (i.e., lack of medical care, low wages, lack of education, racial discrimination, etc.).

With 2 research articles, present a focused argument that expands on an example of the exploitation that Kincaid outlines in her book. Using a Microsoft or Google doc, write a 1200-1500-word essay. With the exception of the first prompt option, the essay should include 1-2 outside sources (research articles) only from LPC’s Library databases.

Format the essay in an MLA style with in-text citations (page numbers when quoting/paraphrasing), and a Works Cited page. Save the document, upload into Canvas, and click Submit.
