• The novel Individutopia is a dystopia, which imagines a future in which the current ills of society are taken to an exaggerated extreme. We’ve talked about how features of Renee’s world are exaggerations of our own world: crowded living, rising debt, isolation, etc., are all present in our world but so much worse in the future in which Renee lives. Dystopias are not entirely full of doom, however – they hold hope for breaking free of these disastrous futures. Postmodernism is a theory which believes that the world is fractured and built on multiplicity rather than unity, leading to difference and diversity rather than conformity.
