It was an incident that devastated America. Since its occurrence, there has been much debate to what exactly happened on that horrific day in November of 1963. There are conspiracy theories dealing directly with the assassination itself. Some of these theories suggest that there was more than one gunman who shot President Kennedy, others go as far as to claim that the accused gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was just a patsy in the killing. It is a highly controversial topic that is still debated today. However, through my research I have conducted and with the help of several sources, I hope to inform the reader that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was a premeditated attack by a solo gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, who fired three shots killing the President and wounding Governor Connally.Since the assassination of JFK has been a highly discussed topic for several decades, there are many different forms of sources to review. Although it would be relatively impossible to review all the sources, I tried to find a variety of different sources that were credible and informative. In one of the books I looked over entitled Silencing the Lone Assassin: the Murders of JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald, author John Canal attempts to disprove some of the conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination. He especially does a good job when he confronts the possibility that Lee Harvey Oswald was assigned the task to assassinate the president by a larger group, such as Cuba, USSR, or the mafia. This book will be helpful in supporting my thesis that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.Another book that I will refer to in my research paper is The JFK Myths: A Scientific Investigation of the Kennedy Assassination by Larry Sturdivan. The book takes a scientific approach to explaining what happened in the assassination. It has a lot of information to help support my belief that Oswald fired three shots that killed Kennedy and wounded Connally. It also helps disprove the belief that there was another gunman that fired from an area in front of Kennedy, perhaps the Grassy Knoll. It is a newer book and focuses on the facts.The next two books I reviewed were The Zapruder Film: Reframing JFK’s Assassination by David Wrone and Programmed to Kill by Ion Pacepa. These books, for the most part, try to convince their readers that the assassination may have been a conspiracy. In the book about the Zapruder film, David Wrone emphasizes his analysis of what happened with the assassination based on the short film that was taken by amateur photographer Abraham Zapruder. The film captures the images of Kennedy and Connally being shot. Wrone takes this film and attempts to break it down by frames and use it to oppose the findings in the Warren Commission Report. In the book by Pacepa, he establishes credibility by proclaiming he was a member of the KGB in Soviet Russia during the assassination of Kennedy. He believes that the USSR had influenced Oswald to assassinate Kennedy, but also recalls events and occurrences that, in the end, led to Oswald acting alone.Probably one of the most useful documents that supports my thesis is The Warren Commission Report. It is an investigation conducted by Earl Warren and many other members in the Department of Justice. It is a report of their findings that led them to conclude that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and fired three shots killing President Kennedy. This will be a key source in my research paper.Another beneficial document that will help support my thesis is the article “The Zapruder Film: Reframing JFK’s Assassination Review” by Kermit Hall. It is a review of the book I reviewed above that supports the belief of a conspiracy. Hall, however, does a good job in discrediting David Wrone’s book and beliefs by picking apart his findings.The article entitled “The JFK Assassination Debates: Lone Gunman versus Conspiracy Book Review” by Thomas Turner is yet another good source that helps support my thesis. In the article, Turner responds to Michael Kurtz’s book The JFK Assassination Debates: Lone Gunman versus Conspiracy in which Kurtz believes there was more than one shooter involved in the assassination of Kennedy. Turner does a good job in pointing out Kurtz’s contradictions within his book about the validity of eyewitnesses and discrediting Kurtz as a result.PBS conducted an interview with Lee Harvey Oswald’s brother Robert Oswald in 2003. Although it is not expert analysis, I believe it can be useful in the support of my thesis. Robert Oswald discusses how he wishes that his brother was innocent of the horrible crime; however, he believes that Lee Harvey Oswald was guilty of acting alone and killing the president.Another important source that I will refer to in my research paper is the segment “Magic Bullet Debunked” from the documentary entitled The Kennedy Assassination: Beyond Conspiracy. It has experts analyze the assassination and in this particular segment, they determine that the “magic bullet” theory that was reported in the Warren Commission Report is accurate. This helps support my thesis that three shots were fired. The first shot was the “magic bullet” shot, the second shot missed, and the third shot fatally wounded President Kennedy.Another source that supports the idea of a conspiracy by the CIA is the article entitled “Destiny Betrayed: The CIA, Oswald, and the JFK Assassination.” It discusses flaws in the Warren Commission Report and tries to present ways of suggesting that CIA was directly linked to the murder. However, the validity of the article is questionable. There is no author and throughout the article there are no references to support it. Therefore, I plan on not including this article in my research.Some other sources that I researched but found to be illegitimate or not useful include the article “Don DeLillo’s Libra: History as Text, History as Trauma” by Leonard Wilcox. Although it seemed to be credible, it focuses entirely on the fictional book Libra (which presents the idea that the assassination of JFK is a conspiracy) and does not really discuss what happened with the assassination in itself.The website entitled “The Kennedy Assassination” by John Adams appeared to have lots of information on the murder, however its appearance, in my opinion, deemed it implausible.The motion picture JFK by Oliver Stone has some validity to it. It pertains to the idea that the incident was a conspiracy, however, after further research of the movie, there was many fictional parts added to the film to make it more appeasing to the public eye. Therefore, I decided against including it in my research paper.Finally, the bibliography of Lee Harvey Oswald as presented by Spartacus Educational had some good information included on the site, however, most of it is a repetitive of my other sources I plan on including in my research paper.I believe I have a lot of information that will help support my thesis. This information obtained from journals, websites, books, documentaries, and interviews will allow me to defend my thesis that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was a premeditated attack by a solo gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, who fired three shots- killing the President, and wounding Governor Connally.
