Assignment Question

1). Read the article related to counselor characteristics needed for crisis intervention work. There are many attributes, characteristics, traits, and knowledge that are listed that are important to working with clients in crisis. Discuss some of these attributes, characteristic, traits, and knowledge you have and some that you do not have. Describe how you might work to address these. Edwin Friedman, a Jewish rabbi and family therapist, coined the term the “non-anxious presence” to describe a person who can remain calm and not be down into the anxiety that exists around him or her. This is vital for those who work in crisis situations where anxiety is generally high. There is a link to a personal reflection by a pastor that illustrates many of the attributes discussed in the article as well as looking at this concept with a little levity.

Look at pages 351-352 in our textbook, there is a list of guidelines which are key for providing crisis intervention services.
