With the continued growth of ethnic nationalism and the formation of new nation-states, empires increasingly found it difficult to manage their diverse and discontent population (e.g. Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire, etc.). Following World War I, many of these unliberated peoples obtained a degree of self-determination previously denied. However, the war did not adequately solve many longstanding issues between peoples and nations. With a global recession following the war, the world readied for another far more costly conflict—World War II. The seeds of conflict in both wars were numerous and complicated. Many people feel that these wars are behind us today, yet conflict among nations and peoples occurs regularly.
