Does such an idea run counter to the idea of human rights?

Emerging as an arguably logical extension of the type of thinking that has generated the human-rights-related notions of racism and heterosexism, the idea of “speciesism” is now an established concept. One permutation of speciesism is that it is morally wrong to consider people as more important than other living species. Does such an idea run counter to the idea of human rights? Morally and legally, should people be considered more deserving of “rights” than other life forms? Does speciesism take the notion of equality too far?
