Assignment OverviewHere is a list of potential topics/issues that you can choose from for your research paper:Prison sentencing reformsRacism in law enforcement, abuse of powerSpecific racism towards certain groupsAffirmative action perception versus justice (public)Private prisonsInequality of death penalty sentencesMandatory minimums. 3-strikes lawWar on drugs, gang violence, cocaine versus crackRehabilitation, or lack thereof, career trainingPrison reformsHiring of ex-felons, or the obstacles to it, stigmaRestoration of voting rights, disenfranchisement, voter ID lawsWelfare reformPlea bargainingOvercrowding in prisons, early release, low-level crimes (marijuana possession)Mass incarcerationUsing race as a way to divide those at the lower end of the economic ladderHow justice system is used to create the new Jim Crow AmericaIs colorblindness an actual/realistic goal?African American activism in response to curbing of civil rightsThe rise of KKK and white nationalism and support by government, Proud Boys13th Amendment, 14th Amendmentaffirmative action in educationSome of these are written about in a couple of chapters, and that’s okay. While we have not yet finished reading The New Jim Crow (and I hope you have at least started it!), I want you to think about one or two topics that have struck you, have grabbed your attention in some way. You do not necessarily have to stick with it for now. This is merely exploratory. For this assignment, you are to choose one of the topics above and do a preliminary search by using De Anza’s online library. This is the library’s link. You are going to do an article search based on the topic you have chosen. I would suggest using the EBSCO database. Since you are accessing the database from home (or off-campus in some way), you will need to login. Once you are logged in, start some basic searches using the topic you have chosen; you may have to use variable search terms so as to narrow your results. Think about the way Alexander uses phrases in her book, and this can help you narrow things down. As you scroll down the page, you can see that you can narrow your search. Try using “scholarly (peer-review) journals” or “periodicals”; you can also narrow down the dates, like just looking at what was published last year. I would suggest limiting your search to the last 3-5 years.Once you have some search results, take a look at some of them. You can browse the titles, but you want to read a couple of them for this individual assignment. Here is what you assignment is for this week:Read a couple of the search results, i.e., articles. In your response, write about what you noticed. What did the authors have to say about your topic/issue? How did what they wrote compare to what Alexander writes about? Were the articles interesting? Why? Did your articles end up being really about the topic/issue you chose, or did they go in a completely different directions? Was there something else you wish the authors had included? Did the articles give you a better understand of the topic/issue? Why did you choose the topic/issue that you did? Do you have background or previous knowledge about this topic/issue?
