The argument between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton essentially came down to how much power the Federal Government should have. Hamilton believed the new federal government created by the US Constitution needed to consolidate its power over the States, to deal with threats at home and abroad. Hamilton favored strong ties with England, and distrusted the people. Jefferson, however, argued more for States’ Rights and to limit the power of the Federal Government.
