Analyze the argument in the brochure from the British Museum (attached via scan). The brochure explains the museum’s position on The Parthenon Sculptures (also referred to in places as “The Elgin Marbles”). These sculptures and sculpture fragments were originally part of the Parthenon, the ancient Greek temple to the goddess Athena, patron deity of Athens. The Parthenon sits on top of the Acropolis, a hill high up overlooking the city. The sculptures were taken off the temple during the nineteenth century by Lord Elgin, a Scottish aristocrat, and brought to London to be housed in the British Museum, where they have resided ever since. Please read the brochure carefully a couple of times. Also read the New York Times article “Greek Statue Travels Again,” published on December 6, 2014. In your analysis of the Brochure, please use some information from the NY Times article as part of the evidence you provide. Be sure to EXPLAN HOW the argument is being made in the brochure and not simply what the argument is. Consider the extent to which you find the brochure’s argument persuasive, and why you are or are not, ultimately, persuaded by them.
