To complete this discussion, you must first read and study South Carolina Declaration of the Causes of Secession, December 24, 1860 and Alexander Hamilton Stephens, The “Cornerstone Speech” (1861). These can be found in Chapter 14 of REVEL. Select “Source Collection: Chapter 4” and then click on the primary source from South Carolina and Stephens. Each state the left the Union to join the Confederacy issued some sort of declaration explain why they were justify in leaving. The one we are reading is from South Carolina, which was the first state to secede, but you can find all the others online if you are interested. Alexander Hamilton Stephens was the vice-president of the Confederacy and his Cornerstone Speech, delivered soon after the Confederacy was created, laid down the principles upon which this new country he helped lead would be established.
