Vision: More than Meets the Eye (Worth 25 points)

The purpose of this discussion is to ponder alternative perspectives and the ways in which our perception impacts our thinking process. (Learning Objectives 3a and 5a)

Please note: This discussion forum is “post first”; will not see your classmates’ posts until after you post.

Step 1: Watch the following TED Talk by Isaac Lidsky (11 min): What Reality Are You Creating for Yourself?

Step 2: Lidsky states, “I learned that what we see is not universal truth. It is not objective reality. What we see is a unique, personal, virtual reality that is masterfully constructed by our brain.” Later in the talk, he advises that to “live your life eyes wide open,” you should “hold yourself accountable for every moment, every thought, every detail. See beyond your fears. Recognize your assumptions. Harness your internal strength. Silence your internal critic. Correct your misconceptions about luck and about success. Accept your strengths and your weaknesses, and understand the difference. Open your heart to your bountiful blessings.”

Compose a paragraph describing a time when a fear or an assumption was shaping your reality, like it did for Lidsky. Did you let it overcome you, or did you overcome it? If you overcame it, which piece of Lidsky’s advice is closest to the method you used to do so? Or, if you let it control you, which piece of advice could you have used to break free from it?

Note: perhaps this fear or assumption is currently occurring in your life and influencing your view of reality. If so, talk about which piece of Lidsky’s advice could be most helpful to you in changing your perspective.

Step 3: Review the grading rubric (webpage, opens in new tab), which explains the expectations for your post and reply. Once you’ve checked that your paragraph meets the expectations, post it to the discussion board.

Step 4: After you post, your classmates’ posts will appear. Meaningfully and respectfully reply to one post, such as by validating how your classmate was able to overcome his/her challenge.

Step 5: After the posts and replies are graded, please access your rubric and feedback. Here are the steps to do so: http://mycoursessupport.spcollege.edu/discussion-rubrics (webpage, opens in new tab).
