READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY You will be turning this assignments for this project 1.The Full Write Up 2.Your Coding Sheet/Table 3.The Extra Credit SELECTION OF A TOPIC AND MEDIA FORM You are going to analyze at least 20 cases of a media form, looking for specific images, words, depictions, etc. that show a certain theme, bent, prejudice, etc. The choices of media forms include •Advertisements •Articles (web, magazine, news, blog, etc) •Books/Short Stories (Can’t do 20 books except picture books or graphic novels, but other aspects of books) •Songs/Music (lyrics, topics, genres) •TV or Movies (Twenty movies is a lot, but you can look at certain aspects of movies) •Videos (music, YouTube, etc.) Possible topics include things like: •Images of different types of couples in web advertisements •Political bent or bias in web articles •References to dating or romance in men’s magazines. •Images and words that describe the “damsel in distress” in DC vs Marvel comic books •How the protagonist’s sex and/or race is identified among sample of books by minority authors •Curse words or references to violence in a certain genre or across genres of music •Lyrics depicting drug or alcohol use in country music •Violence towards women in a random sample of the Billboard Top 100 •References to body size or image in tv episodes •Villain identity and description in the 20 top-grossing action films of the 2000s •See the examples in the Content Analysis Notes in the module •Some other theme or focus, words or images •You can use one of these suggestions, adapt them in some way to a different medium or topic, or come up with something on your own. There are endless possibilities. I would strongly suggest you pick a topic and media form that will allow you to easily complete the project in the time give. Don’t spend too much time picking a topic. Find something straight forward that interests you and is straight forward. If you have any questions do so ASAP to give yourself enough time to finish the project. STEPS OF THE PROJECT STEP 1: Preparation 1.Choose a topic and media form 2.Identify a research question (or exploratory avenue) for the media 3.Decide on sampling (you need to have at least 20 cases) •Can you use every case? For example, you could use the top 30 popular YouTube videos or every Best Picture winner since the first Academy Awards. •If you aren’t using every case, what is your sampling plan? •Will you have to stratify the media? If so, how? If not, is it random or purposive sampling? •You NEED to have a sampling plan in place and identify it at the beginning of you project STEP 2: Coding 1.Identify your variables and how you are going to code them 2.You need at least one variable (ex., couple type) that you will code based on variations (different sex, same sex male, same sex female, married, dating, intra racial, inter racial, etc). 3.For example, if you are doing a content analysis of curse words in lyrics, you might code different curse words or how they are used in the lyrics OR if you might code different ways people die in horror movies 4.Use an Excel Sheet or Google Sheet 5.See the example in the Module Notes (Ex., looking at advertised projects in fitness magazines vs. fashion magazines.) 6.This doesn’t have to be complicated. Just think about what your research question is and your variable(s) and coding will come from that. STEP 3: Full Write up (worth 13 points)Answer ALL the following questions (Number your answers; Use complete sentences and paragraph form when appropriate) 1.What was your initial research question? Did you stick with it or did it change mid-way through coding? (1 pt) 2.Give a brief summary of the following information in paragraph format: (5 pts) 1.What medium you chose to analyze. What type of media? What population of cases? (1-2 sentences) (2 pts) 2.What kind of decisions you made when sampling (3-4 sentences) (2 pts) i.Did you use every case? ii.If not, how did you sample? (random, stratified, purposeful?) iii.Did you cut out certain specific types of the medium or certain cases from your sample, for what reason? iv.Was there any sampling bias? Was it accidental or on purpose? 3.How many cases did your final sample include? (1 pt) 4.What methods were used to sort through the data (2 sentences max) (1 pt) i. Ex. Excel, pen, paper, and highlighter, other programs e. What was you coding scheme? (~3 sentences) (2 pts) i.words or images to look for ii.Any issues with that? iii.If so, what kind? 3.What top theme or themes did you find? (2 pts) 4.What are your overall conclusions from the content analysis you did? (2 pts) 1.Are the conclusions different from what you expected? 2.If you had to redo this project on a larger scale, would you change the type of media or sampling you use? Why or why not? Note: under other circumstances, you would do a short review of the literature for your research question and put your findings/conclusion in context. For our purposes, you won’t be doing a lit review. STEP 4: Upload your Coding Sheet/Table (worth 2 points) Upload either the file or a screenshot or photo of the coding sheet/table •The sheet must show the variables and counts •This is to show your work. I won’t grade on content, just that you show it to me. •This will be uploaded as a different assignment from the Full Write Up EXTRA CREDIT Graphical Representation of Findings (EXTRA CREDIT 3 pts total) ● Make a graph providing the information of overall themes found broken down by percent or number of occurrences (2 pts)○ (Can do this in Excel or Sheets) ● Create 2 graphs presenting the information you found broken down by another variable of interest (1 pt) Ex. When doing a content analysis of magazine ads, you may find patterns of partial nudity and sexualization of products. You can then see if these percentages look different when broken down by who the magazine is targeted to (ex. Women’s fashion versus Men’s health magazines).
