3. Identify who will be the participant and the examiner. This can be you; or, a friend, parent,
spouse, etc.
4. Have the participant sit in a comfortable location.
5. The examiner should calculate the participant’s respiratory rate by counting the number
of breaths in 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four. This will give you the number of
breaths per minute. Record this in Table 4.
6. The examiner should now calculate the participant’s heart rate using the pulse. A pulse is
the soft throb felt when blood rushes through the arteries. To take a pulse, place the pad
of your forefinger on the radial artery and count the number of beats felt in fifteen seconds.
Multiply this number by four to calculate the heart rate in beats per minute. Record the
heart rate in Table 4.
Note: The pulse can be felt on any artery close to the surface and compressed over a
bone or other firm tissue. If available, a stethoscope can also be used to listen to the
heartbeat by placing the chestpiece on the thorax, just medial to the left nipple.
7. Instruct the participant to aerobically exercise for 45 – 60 seconds. Examples of this include
jumping jacks, running in place, mountain climbers, etc. Anything which elevates the heart
and respiratory rates is acceptable.
8. The examiner should now calculate the participant’s respiratory rate by counting the
number of breaths in 15 seconds. Multiply this number by four. This will give you the
number of breaths per minute. Record this data in Table 4.
9. Calculate the participant’s heart rate as in Step 6. Record the heart rate in Table 4
