Topic: Describe some place you have been. This should be a place you have visited, your home town, a favorite cafe, home, a park, a school, a college, or whatever else works for you. Remember to create a dominant impression. In other words, when someone reads your essay, that reader should get the impression that this is a good place or a bad place, a place you enjoyed or a place you hated. This was a safe place or a scary place, a wonderful place or a dull place. Whatever the impression, make it clear and consistent. Remember to use the senses. Sight is often the one we think of using first, and that is fine, but if you were describing a cafe, the sense of smell might be just as important or the sounds of dishes clanking around and orders being shouted to the kitchen. You can use more than one sense, of course. Remember to proofread your essay. Do not use fragments. Reading the essay out loud to yourself often helps with catching little things. This is not a narrative, so I don’t want to know how you got there or what happened after you left. Keep the focus on the place itself, and start with the place itself. You are a camera for this. Take a picture and describe it. I want to know what you saw, smelled, heard, touched, and/or tasted. Avoid using ‘you’ unless it is a direct address. Even better, don’t use it at all.
