The study of intercultural communication is another key dimension of Communication Studies. To do it well, we need to first recognize
that each of us is a product of culture, often in complex configurations. In this paper, you will complete a Cultural Profile of your
cultural associations. Without sharing any private details, discuss your identify in relation to some of the components of cultural identity
listed in the text. These are:
• Gender Identity
• Age Identity
• Racial Identity
• Ethnic Identity
• Regional Identity
Discuss at least three of these components as they relate to your cultural identity. It will be especially interesting to discuss any that you
enact in interesting ways. This may include identities that are mixed – for instance, many Americans have complex regional, racial or
ethnic identities. You may also find that you enact certain identities in ways that defy cultural scripts; you may be in your twenties but
enjoy quilting or a Louisiana Creole who grew up partly in China, etc.
Finally, sum up how this identity impacts you as a communicator. Do you find share certain communicative values with people from a similar background? Does being aware of your cultural identity make it more enjoyable to talk to people from different backgrounds?
Conversely, does your cultural identity limit you in some ways?
