Uncategorized Assignment-helpYou will write two papers this term, each of which will be worth 30 points. One paper (“Issues in the News” is geared toward applying insights about membership to real-life examples. The other paper (“Connecting to Theory”) is aimed at theorizing or speculating about connections between the material in this class and theories presented either in other Communication classes or classes you’ve taken in other fields/departments around campus.Length and formattingEach paper should be approximately 3 pages (maximum 4 pages) double spaced, excluding references and the title page, in Times New Roman 12 pt font. Please use APA style to cite your sources (including the textbook, class readings, and any outside sources like news articles you reference). Papers should be polished and proof-read. Please include a title page according to APA style (see an example here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa6_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_fo rmat.html). I encourage you to come up with a fun, interesting title for each paper!Due datesPaper due dates are:• Friday July 10 at midnight (end of Week 3)• Sunday July 26 at midnight (end of Week 5)You may write the papers in whichever order you prefer—so you may either write the “Issues in the News” paper first, followed by the “Connecting to Theory” paper, or write “Connecting to Theory” first followed by “Issues in the News.” It’s up to you—just make sure to specify in your paper header which assignment you are completing. Submit your paper in the Gauchospace portal embedded in that week’s module (e.g., whichever paper you write first, submit it in the “Paper 1” portal in the Week 3 module).Paper Topic: Issues in the NewsThis assignment provides you with an opportunity to apply theories, concepts, and real organizational members’ experiences. This assignment encourages you to be attentive to current events and to consider how our class topics and discussions relate to current organizational issues you see in the media. With this objective, students are asked to read and consider news articles (not blogs) with a publication date no earlier than January 1, 2020.First read the news from news websites or hard copy news publications. (See the list of potential websites below. You can use other news sources, but see the list for more information.) As you look through the news sites, think about what you have learned in class relative to an issue that you found especially intriguing. Use the following guidelines:1. Choose one main theory or concept that was presented in class or the readings that you believe iscentral to the news issue. Your news article must be about an issue that is important to workers in aparticular organization or occupation. In your paper, discuss this theory/concept and how it appliesto the news article. You are encouraged to bring in other class topics (limit it to a total of three),but keep the focus on the central one (doing otherwise would dilute your analysis too much).2. Begin the paper by briefly summarizing the issue that appeared in the news. One paragraph is recommended. Include a link to the article in your references so that I can read the article too.3. Then, discuss how the issue in the news is related to or can be explained by the theory/concept you have selected and how it affects organizational members. Be sure to define all class terms and theories that you use and cite sources using APA style (APA 6th or 7th edition are both fine).4. Discuss how the issue/situation could be improved or better understood based on what you have learned in the class. What are your ideas?5. Finally, what are the implications for organizational members and organizational leaders?Your paper will be graded based on your: 1) ability to effectively explain the theory/concept andlink it to the news issue, 2) ability to explain the organizational issue, 3) suggestions for the organization,4) ability to identity the implications of the suggestions you offer, 5) creativity, as long as it isworkable/effective, and 6) ability to write a paper that is grammatically correct, is well-cited, andexpresses your ideas well and argues your point.Keep in mind that this paper focuses on application, so your focus should be on how real-lifeorganizations and their members can apply knowledge about membership to their practices.Suggested news sources: Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Santa BarbaraIndependent, The Guardian, Business Insider, Wall Street Journal, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, yourlocal (hometown) newspaper, or any other legitimate news source. (Feel free to contact me withquestions about whether something “counts” as a legitimate news website.)Note: since many news sites are paywalled and offer limited views without subscription, ISTRONGLY recommend saving a PDF copy of your news article once you find it since you maybe blocked from further views. Most computers will allow you to do this by using the “print”function and choosing “print to PDF,” then saving the file in a convenient location.
