Topic: The Qatari women’s national rugby team won the West Asia Rugby Championship 2019 and the Qatari B team finished third in the tournament. However, in the squads of both the A and the B team was not one Qatari citizen (see attachment with squads). As distinct from other major sports such as basketball and soccer, rugby belongs to a small group of sports where citizenship is not the sole option for playing on national teams. Other routes include having ancestry in the country in question or fulfilling certain residence requirements. At the 2019 West Asia Rugby Championship, all players in the Qatari national team were of foreign nationality and qualified by residence. Discuss: How do you explain the absence of Qatari citizens in the Qatari national team, and what do you think about being represented by foreign nationals?
