History 2015Summer 2020, Prof. RothPlease write a five to six page essay (doubled spaced) on ONE of the following three questions. The choice is yours. Each question asks you to tell a story with a clear thesis about the history of crime and/or criminal justice in America. Be sure that your story is clear and coherent, and that your thesis is supported with detailed evidence (including names, dates, etc.) from lectures, discussions, and readings. Be certain in your first paragraph to answer the question briefly (by stating your thesis) and to outline the steps in which you will prove your thesis in the body of your essay. Please think about cause and effect, and about the timing and historical context of events. Why do things happen when they do? What forces come together to lead a person in a particular time and place to become a violent criminal? A drug user? History is about cause and effect—about how and why events take place—which depends in turn on knowing who did what, where, and when. And remember especially that Butterfield’s and Quinones’s theories are “plural”: it’s not just one thing that has made America an extraordinarily violent or drug addicted society. The history of violence: The History of Violence: How and why did America become a violent society, according to Fox Butterfield? How do his theories compare with the theories of Samuel Walker and Professor Roth? And can his theories account for the relative non-violence of the contemporary heroin trade in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky? The History of Drugs: When and why did opiates, cocaine, marijuana, and other drugs become ubiquitous in American life? When did they become illegal? (Hint: Don’t forget the lectures on the history of drugs and drug policy.) Finally, what has caused the drug epidemics that have gripped the United States since the 1960s? Especially in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia? [Remember to mention all of the major causes you can think of with the help of Sam Quinones and lectures. Build a complex argument.] And why do you think law enforcement and treatment programs have so far been unable to stop it?Criminal Justice System: Consider the twentieth-century debate between advocates of the “crime control perspective,” the “social justice perspective,” and the “civil liberties perspective” as defined by Walker. What are the strengths and weaknesses of these perspectives in suggesting how the criminal justice system should deal with the Boskets? The Nayarit drug traffickers? Do any of these perspectives understand the root causes of crime, in all their complexity? From the customer:This essay also requires text from history books; Dreamland by Sam Quinones, Popular Justice by Samuel Walker, and All God’s Children by Fox Butterfield. I have these books on hand as well at the lecture notes in class, so if you need any of those resources, I’ll do my best to supply it.
