Literature Review Capstone Project The Impact of cultural influences in Mental health Counseling Theories and Practices in the education systemOption 2: Focused Literature Review. Students will conduct a scholarly literature review of a contemporary topic in counseling or related area that is of particular interest. The objective of this option is to explore a question in-depth through research and scholarly work. This work will be driven by a critical research question of the student’s own design; it may be population-focused or issue specific. Students may investigate a field or context of interest related to future practice and imagine what you would like to contribute. Research literature on the work being done in those contexts; describe what kinds of interventions are they using, why are those interventions being used and your own analysis, questions and ideas. For those students moving onto a PhD program, this could lay the groundwork for a proposal. Students are encouraged to use this option to reflect upon and synthesize learnings from previous courses and then go deeper into one area of particular interest. Faculty look for projects to have a clear focus, are relevant and are high quality. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the program’s central tenets: multicultural responsiveness, social constructionist/postmodern theory, knowledge of trauma informed care and recovery movement principles. See “Literature Review Guidelines and Grading Rubric” in Module 2 for further instruction.Chapter 1. 6-8 pages. Part 1. (3-4 pages). This chapter should succinctly describe your emerging theoretical orientation and personal counseling philosophy. Your paper should be personal yet should also be grounded in the program readings and demonstrate the breadth and depth of your theoretical understandings (with citations). You should draw from readings, discussions and assignments from previous coursework throughout the program. Be sure to properly cite the authors who have influenced your thinking.Part 2. (3 pages) Written reflection on learnings/influences/past. Choose a “seed” idea. Reflect back over the past year and imagine one idea or concept that has impacted you. Think about one concept that particularly resonated with you; something connected to theory that you have been trying to apply more in your work. Perhaps it was a single quote, an article, book, lecture or other experience that sparked your interest. Describe it – try to be precise. Tell the reader what it is about and describe your understanding of it. Here are some additional questions to consider (you don’t need to address them all, they are available to help you begin writing, if needed).•When did you first notice this idea or principle in your work or in your life? What told you that it was important to you?•What are you currently doing that you would say is a reflection of this particular idea, practice or principle? Say a little bit about the times you thought you had managed to apply the idea or principle to your own practice.•When you did it, what did you notice? How did it effect the conversation you were engaging in at the time? Your thoughts about yourself? Your hopes or plans? Feelings?•What was this like for you? Did you like it or not? Did it suit you or not? Or something in between?•Why do you give it this evaluation?•What possibilities did the idea spark and what would you like it to grow into? Think about how you might apply that knowledge into a project. What would you like to investigate further?Part 3. (1-2 sentences). Provide a summary statement of what you will be doing in Module 2; provide the instructor with some sense of what you are planning to focus on for your project.
