He argues against the then prevalent advocacy for bilingual education, insisting, “What I needed to learn in school was that I had the right, and the obligation, to speak the public language.” In his essay, he proceeds to distinguish between private and public language and the function of each.Write an essay in which you apply Rodriguez’s conclusions about the importance of public and private language as a “lens” to one of the other authors we read in this unit (Quan or Mellix). Based on the author’s attitudes toward public and private language, consider whether the author would support bilingual education (as Rodriguez defines it where the student leans English while maintaining his or her private language in school). Refer to the key areas we discussed in class which underlie Rodriguez’s argument: the role of a family or private language (and the issue of intimacy), the role of a public language, and subsequently, the value of a bilingual education The controlling question for your inquiry into the artifact is “how does language shape a person’s identity?”The authors of each of the “artifact” texts address these issues in different ways and to different degrees, so you may not be able to apply every part of the “lens” to your “artifact.” Also, the authors of the “artifact” essays may not use the exact same language which Rodriguez does (public / private / intimate) but may in fact be addressing the same issues.
