The paper is to address considerations of: 1.) The challenges facing this person upon assuming office 2.) The policies adopted to address these challenges 3.) The degree to which these policies proved to be successful 4.) The degree to which the leader remained true to the promises made upon taking office 5.) An overall assessment of this person’s accomplishments during her/his years as president Grading Rubric: Assessment of Challenges (10 points): Does the paper accurately, clearly, and concisely capture the challenges faced by a given leader and their country at the outset of their presidential term? Analysis of Policies (20 points): Does the paper accurately identify central and important policies of a given leader? Does the paper make a clear and logical analysis as to the success or failure of these policies? Is that argument supported by appropriate evidence and data? Overall Assessment (10 points): Does the paper include an overall assessment of the leader that synthesizes the sections of the paper? Does it assess the degree to which the leader remained true to the promises made upon taking office? Argument and Organization (10 points): Does the paper present a coherent introductory paragraph with a thesis? Does the paper support the thesis while still accounting for nuance and complexity? Is it organized logically with transitions between sections? Effective Writing (20 points): Is the writing clear, effective, and professional? Is it edited for correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar? Is the paper original and engaging? Sources (15 points): Does the paper draw on a range of appropriate sources (at least three, if the sources are thorough, like long journal articles or book chapters, but most students will need more sources than this to answer these questions). Does the paper synthesize sources and note the sources’ potential limits? Are sources properly cited in the paper?
