This type of writing requires your imagination and skills in interpretation as you use clear communication skills to synthesize and evaluate arguments, problems, and solutions. You will demonstrate academic responsibility by practicing citation and you will use your background knowledge gained so far to describe and explain the meaning of something in Philosophy. You will apply your explanation to a real-world problem and then present reasons to justify solving that problem in a way that connects to philosophical concepts, principles, or arguments. You will conclude your essay with brief statement of an argument that includes a Problem, Claim, and Reasons. 2) You should use the Application Paper Template.pdf Actions to plan out your ideas and understand the structure of the essay you are being asked to write for this assignment. The Template will help separate out the key components to this assignment and help make sure your essay includes all of the graded objectives. Please do not submit the template for a grade. You are required to write out a fluid essay, with multiple paragraphs, transition sentences, and appropriate formatting for a college level humanities writing assignment. 3) This essay assignment is part of the Writing Assignments in PHIL 101. A video in Panopto Recordings helps set the tone for “Writing in PHIL 101” with helpful strategies and a summary of the big-picture. Your Application Paper will build on skills from the Analysis Paper and others that will be utilized in the Final Paper. The more important thing is that you demonstrate the writing ability to analyze, synthesize, and reason. Depth is what matters more than length, but depth often requires length to get there. After you have spent time planning things out using the Problem Worksheet, condense and combine it into one long (or two short) paragraphs. Your Applied Problem should include (a) Context and dot-connecting, (b) tension, and (c) imperative. 2. Context Description and Critical Analysis: Provide academically responsible citation. Demonstrate an ability to read and write in a critical manner. Connect-the-dots to what other people have said about this argument, or attempt to break down the argument into component parts. You will introduce an interpretation (yours or someone else’s) and identify reasons that help support your analysis. 3. Toolkit Usage: Incorporate the Good Thinker’s Toolkit into your essay AT LEAST 3 times. All Toolkit questions should be answered, or Toolkit sentences should be used as transitions between ideas. You can write them in a bracket or make the letter in the question that matches the toolkit bold. I am looking for you to “use” them. Don’t leave them unanswered and don’t use Toolkit questions as rhetorical questions. 4. Well-Reasoned Argument: Present a well-reasoned argument related to the application of philosophy to a real-world problem. You will demonstrate clear and relevant points of connection that show the ideas you are discussing can in fact APPLY to the problem you have identified. Your argument should contain (a) a primary claim about what action must be taken, (b) a reason that uses philosophical concepts or ideas to defend the claim, and (c) a defense of the relevancy of your application of philosophy.
