You’ll notice that some of these questions (making lists of details and specifics; using lists to come to a point of analysis; ordering from most basic to least obvious; expressing and illustrating a key idea) are the kind of questions I’ve been asking you all semester. Those are indeed the kinds of questions and exercises you do to get ideas for an essay.Once you submit this assignment, go ahead and keep working on your essay. I will give everyone feedback, but do not wait for it before you begin, as time (as always in summer) is limited.Use the format you have used for all previous exercises for this exercise. Your grade (for this exercise) will be based on thorough and thoughtful completion of all these steps.1. Which pair of characters did you decide to write about and why?2. Go back to the two texts these characters come from. Your insights should grow out of textual details about these characters. Skim back over EVERY PAGE on which these characters appear. Every page will not be of use to you, but you should refresh your memory and search for key details.Then, for EACH Character: make a list of key actions, words, descriptions and attitudes. Again, you may not use all of these in your essay (and you should not feel obliged to try). But trust me, doing this will highlight some similarities that you did not otherwise see.So here’s what I want your two lists to look like. Give me:A full sentence stating the key action, word, description, attitude, etc., that you have found and the page number. Seriously don’t give huge ranges (from pp. 300-320 Achilles fights Hector). You are getting more detailed (Hector decides to fight, encouraged by his brother’s presence. P. 320) Characters like Achilles do a lot: you can’t put down every single thing. But you should LOOK back over everything they do and decide (based perhaps on who are comparing them with) what details catch your attention. Characters with less action (Hector, Lanval, Shiekh Sam’an) will provide a tighter focus, but be sure to look at what they do, how they do it, what they are like, in a focused, detailed way, too. In a few pages, a character can do lots of things.3. Having made your lists, what are some of the similarities you see developing? Aim for at least 5-6 (you may have more). Make the first one the most obvious; make the next ones less obvious, which you see after some examination; try to make the last one a similarity that connects with some larger issue of the text (theme, idea, etc.).As in all of these exercises, you are not “locked in” to use all of these in your essay. Aim for at least 4 (you can have more), listing them from most obvious to least obvious. Make sure some of these are basic similarities and others more subtle. 5. Working thesis preparation, part A: Based on #4, see if you can sum up in a sentence: HOW are these two characters alike?6. Now think about the second component of the essay: who deals with their circumstances best and why. First, what (to you) is the biggest similar thing these characters seem to deal with. Write it in two sentences: X is . . . . ; Y deals with . . . ..7. Brainstorm: write a paragraph about who you think deals with their circumstances best and why?8. Brainstorm: You have focused on the one who handles it better, but that means one handles it worse. Why do you think the other character handles it less well? Write a paragraph.9. Working thesis preparation, part B: who deals with their circumstances best?10. Working thesis preparation, part C: write a sentence that combines your idea from #5 and your idea from #9. Guess what? You’ve got a working thesis and a rough outline of the body of your essay. Let me stress again that nothing you write here locks you into anything, but you no longer have a blank computer screen to work from.Re-Read the Essay Assignment sheet, especially the help I give about organizing and fleshing out the topics.
