How Are You Motivated?

In the book Why We Do What We Do by Edward Deci, he states, ” Most people seem to think that the most effective motivation comes from outside the person, that it is something one skillful person does to another “(9).

Are you motivated by others? Do people inspire you? Do they bribe you? Do they use guilt to get you to do something? Motivation is a key component to our success; we must be motivated to begin and we must maintain that motivation to continue….

Deci argues, “Most of the learning of preschool children is done not becaus eit is instrumental for achieving something else, but because the children are curious, because they want to know”(21). In this example, Deci is telling us that when we were all young and just beginning our academic journey, no one had to bribe us, or guilt us, or reward us–we were simply motivated to learn, to stay engage in our teacher’s lesson and to complete our work because we were curious. Are you still curious?

Objectives:
Your goal with this discussion board is to practice self-reflection after completing the reading “Extrinsic vs Intrinsic Motivation at Work: What’s the Real Difference?” As you read the assigned reading article, you should have practiced active reading strategies through annotation, note taking, summary, etc. Try to remember the key points of the article and apply them to your life experiences and your motivation. Think about what motivates you to accomplish your goals, and then answer the discussion prompt to follow:

Think about the goals you have set for yourself this semester. What are you planning on achieving? What do you hope to accomplish over the next few months in this class, in your other classes, at home, in your personal relationships, or at your place of employment? What is your motivation? Are you motivated by something inside you (like you did as a child) or are you motivated by some external force?

Intrinsic Motivation = something internal motivate you

Extrinsic Motivation = something external motivates you
