The secondary source essay assignment asks students to read closely and compare two full- length academic articles on women’s economic survival strategies in late-nineteenth and early- twentieth-century Canada: Bettina Bradbury’s “Pigs, Cows, and Boarders: Non-Wage Forms of Survival among Montreal Families, 1861-91,” published in 1984, and Sandra Rollings- Magnusson’s “Canada’s Most Wanted: Pioneer Women on the Western Prairies,” published in 2000. While both of these articles concern women’s economic survival strategies in early Canada, each of them focuses on different groups of women living in drastically different geographical settings and conditions.
