Procedure: – You will observe the infant’s concept of object permanence. Depending on the video clip you choose to use for this assignment, your observation should consist of one or more of the following:
* infant seated in a chair or on the floor sitting up. A toy should be in front of her/him so it can be seen. The toy should then be dropped on the floor. Observe and record the response.
* How does the child respond visually when the toy is dropped? Does she/he look for it? Does she/he know the path the toy will take as it falls?
* infant seated on a flat surface. The child should be shown the toy, making certain it is seen; the toy should be placed under the cloth while the child observes. Observe and record the response. How does the child respond when the toy is hidden under the cloth? Does she/he look for the toy or somewhere else? Does she/he make an emotional or motor response?
* As the child watches, the toy should be moved from under the first cloth and hidden under the second cloth (visible placement). Observe and record the child’s response.
* How does the child respond to Step 3? Does she/he continue to look under the first cloth where she first saw you hide the toy, or does she/he look under the second cloth? Again, what was the emotional and/or motor response?
* toy hidden under the cloth as the child watches. Then while the child cannot see what what is being done, the toy should be hidden under the second cloth, but the first cloth should be in its original position (invisible displacement). Observe and record the child’s response. How does the child respond to the invisible displacement of the toy? Does she/he persist in looking under the first cloth or does she/he go immediately to the second cloth?

Report your findings in a narrative. Be sure to indicate the child’s sex and age as well as the date, time and place of the observation (if this information is available). Remember to record only exactly what happened. If you wish to include comments concerning the child’s developmental skills and needs or personal recommendations, do so at the end of the narrative.
