The thesis itself, is rather trivial in comparison to the way in which it is achieved and defended.Rather, what I need for you to do is to create and develop a method of inquiry that will help you structure the conceptual context through which to learn how to make sense of this material.Perhaps an example will help:If you’ve watched the Iseult and Tristan video lecture from The Philosophical Research Society, you will have noticed that after going through the tale, Professor Salyer then moves on to enumerate a number of elements that bear a lot of philosophical significance for this story (the distinction between Christian, feudal and chivalric love, for instance, or the concept of the pharmakon, the various parallels and symmetries, etc.), and then moves on to list the ways in which various scholars and academics have made use of these elements in order to develop various forms of interpretations for modern audiences.Of course, given the nature of this presentation, Professor Salyer doesn’t really have time to delve deeply into any of these elements and interpretations, but the fact that he has at least listed them could be used by you as a jumping-off point of inspiration. And since you are trying to make sense of three main sources (and not just one, as Professor Salyer is doing in each presentation), you would still have to do a lot of your own thinking, investigating, prodding, testing, etc.Take also as an important example of how to do this the de Rougemont chapter in the Norton textbook. In this reading he does what Professor Salyer doesn’t have the time to do: he attempts to provide a coherent theory about the nature of Tristanian love, as well as its meaning, significance and implications.
