Before the emergence of brain imaging techniques, it was not possible to measure brain activity in human beings noninvasively. To understand brain processes, we had to rely on self-reports, behavioural experiments, animal studies and research on medical patients. Technological advancements now enable researchers to see what happens in people’s brains when they are taking part in experiments. Individual differences in social interactions are a key area that researchers can now look at with neuroimaging techniques.Historically, there has been a lay notion that women are more emotional than men (e.g. Kring and Gordon, 1998; Schwartz, Brown, & Ahem, 1980). To test this hypothesis, we have shown men and women a series of images with emotional content. Each person was shown both positive and negative images, and their brain activity was recorded on a continuous scale.In this research, we wanted to see if women had a more intense brain activity when viewing emotional images compared to men, and if the type of emotion (positive versus negative) made a difference.Research questions1) Is there a response difference between positive and negative stimuli?2) Will gender impact brain activity?3) Do the two variables interact?
