In class, we want to explore those experiences in greater depth to understand how humans make meaning out of them and if we can respond to ours and each other’s experiences with empathy. We also want to explore how the humanities can help us understand our own experiences in a different way. Your Narrative Is there an illness or injury that stands out for you or was a major event in your life? For this assignment, tell a story in the first person describing your experience with the illness or injury and with the health care system because of the illness or injury. Or, is there an illness or injury that stands out for you as a major event in a loved one’s life? Maybe you were a caregiver for the person and you can write from this perspective. Or maybe they shared their journey with you by talking to you about it. Or, to help share their story, you may feel free to interview the person with non-intrusive, open-ended questions, and practice listening with empathy. In this case, be sure to take a few notes and immediately after the interview, free write while the conversation is fresh in your mind.
