Read Longfellow’s poem, “My Lost Youth” (linked below) and the three assigned sections from Whitman’s “Song of Myself,” #s 34, 35, and 36 (pp 1116-1119).What is interesting about the ways that Longfellow and Whitman incorporate history into these poems? Aside from the actual historical events referred to (one naval battle apiece during the War of 1812 for Longfellow and Whitman, one massacre during the Texan Revolution for Whitman), what attitudes toward history itself do the poems seem to convey? Use evidence from the texts in support of your answers.
