We are living in unprecedented and stressful times. In an ethics and diversity class, it is important to examine the current climate and apply what we are learning in class to the overall dynamic in mass culture. Tensions are rising in our country between individuals who wear masks in public and social distance and those who do not. In this act, we need to ask ourselves and budding social scientists and observers, why is this a political statement? As you move through the world this week, observe the behaviors of individuals who are practicing either of these choices: masks or no masks. What is the non-verbal communication with the groups? Is there tension? What does it say about a person when they wear a mask vs. not? Take a few days to observe and give examples of what you see in public, the media, and rhetoric over the week. Pleas write a journal style account of what is happening in the country between masked citizens and unmasked citizens, if you observe anything at all. *Tips for success/keep in mind-Please do not make assumptions about your instructor’s views and perspectives.
