There she comes to the realization that she’s free, and imagines all the years ahead of her as a free woman. But her husband, it turns out, was not killed. At the first sight of him at the front door at the end of the story, she dies instantly. His death was true until it was an illusion. Her dream of freedom, the truest thing she has known, was entirely based on the illusion of his death.
