Assignment Question

For this assignment, you will be summarizing a career (Clinical Child Psychologist) in the field of psychology that interests you. In this paper, you should identify how you will move from being a student to your career of interest following college graduation. Be sure to include the answers to the following questions in your paper and be very specific about your choices.

1) What is the career that you might like to pursue in psychology or that is related to psychology? Be specific – For example, don’t just say “child psychologist,” because that is too broad. Think about what type of child psychologist you might want to be, such as Clinical child psychologist.

2) What types of questions or problems does someone in this field address? What are some of the day-to-day responsibilities or tasks of an individual in this field?

3) What are the types of settings in which the professionals in your chosen career generally work? (mental health clinic, hospital, school, business, academia, military, government, correctional facility, etc.)

4) Why are you interested in this field? Students need to understand the importance of WHY they want to do a particular career before they pursue it. · Be specific. For example, do NOT just say that you want to be a clinical psychologist because you want to help people. Rather, explain why you want to be a clinical psychologist specifically versus some other career that also helps people (such as a school psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, mental health counselor, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, physician’s assistant, etc.). · As an additional example, if you would like to be a school psychologist, don’t just say you want to be a school psychologist because you like working with children or because you like working in a school. Think about whyyou would want to be a school psychologist versus any other career in which you would also be working with children in the school (such as being a teacher, teaching assistant, guidance counselor, school social worker, principal or speech-language pathologist). Think about why you would like working in a school more than a hospital, private practice, etc. Think about what sets your chosen career apart from others that are similar.

5) What degree or degrees (bachelors, masters, PhD, PsyD, MD, etc.) and/or certification and/or licensure is necessary for this career? a. Which degree would you choose? b. Why would you choose this degree? (What does that degree allow you do to that is different than another degree?) c. How long does it generally take to get this degree?

6) What types of experience are necessary to enter the field? For example, what sort of research experience or internship opportunities would you need in order to be competitive for these programs? Would you need a minimum GPA or GRE score? What type of professional experience do you need to get into this graduate school program? If a graduate degree is not necessary for this career, what type of professional experience do you need for an entry-level position in this field?

7) How would you plan to gain the experience necessary or meet the requirements to get into this graduate school program or to gain this professional experience? Be specific. Don’t just write “I would look for internship opportunities” to get into graduate school, but be specific about what kind of internships, how and/or where you are going to look for these opportunities, etc. For example, are there any research labs in which you are interested in working? If so, why?

8) What is the average salary and financial cost of entering this field? a. What is the average starting salary for someone in your field of interest? b. On average, how much does this type of graduate education cost? Will you need to pay for tuition? Can you get a stipend? Writing Mechanics (e.g., correct grammar, no spelling errors or typos, complete sentences) Citing Your Sources (articles or books or websites). When you write a fact, such as “This job has an average starting salary of $30,000” or “People in this career do X, Y, and Z,” you need to write your source – where did you get that information from? You ALWAYS need to cite your sources (back up every fact you state or every claim that you make). ·
