The purpose of synthesis “is to make insightful connections. Those connections can show the relationship(s) between parts of a work or even between two or more works. It is your job to explain why those relationships are important” (Bellevue College). Synthesis requires that you be able to “weave together your own ideas with the ideas of others – the sources you have researched for your essay – in the same paragraph to deepen the discussion or to arrive at a new interpretation or conclusion” (Rosa and Eschholz). For this essay, you will make a claim about one or more pieces of literature and two or more outside source all while incorporating synthesis strategies.
