With his stories, “Aguantando” and “Negocios,” transnational writer Junot Diaz examines the effects of migration on the family members left behind in the home country as well as the effects on the migrants trying to navigate U.S. social, cultural, and racial norms. The mother’s experience tells one story of migration and the father’s story tells another story of migration. Both parents’ experiences provide the reader with a very complicated and layered view of the human cost of migration–the very process by which people become transnational figures.
