What are some of the things we can do to decrease the effects of climate change in the future?
Task 1: Physics – Light and applications of optics (25 marks) of In this part of the culminating activity you will research some of the ways light is used in technology and then display the information on an infographic. Pages, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher are tools that can help you create an infographic. Instructions: a) Research three examples of light technology in our society (1.e., incandescent light bulbs, LED, transmission holograms, etc.). Remember to cite all your sources for task 5. b) Find a visual(s) for each of the examples of light technology that you have researched, Remember to cite where you found your visuals for task 5. c) Display the visual on a poster and use word processing to briefly describe how this technology works. Place the description under each of the visuals on the poster.
Task 2: Biology – Tissues, organs and systems (25 marks) Research one of the following questions on technologies used in Canada. Write a one-page report in sentence form and in your own words. Check for spelling and grammar after completing your summary and add visuals related to your research topic. Answer one of the following questions: a) Describe how ultrasound is used to monitor fetal development. b) Describe the ways that nuclear isotopes (nuclear medicine) can be helpful to the human body and some of the risks involved in this technology.
Task 3: Chemistry – Chemical reactions and their practical applications (25 marks) You will design a small poster of one profession that works with chemicals. Pages, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher are tools that can help you create a poster. Questions to be answered: a) What are some of the safety concerns and/or chemicals that this professional is exposed to in the work place? b) What are the duties of this professional that relate to substances and/or chemicals in the work place? c) Describe some of the safety precautions or procedures this professional would carry out in his/her working environment? Instructions: Choose one of the following professions: a) i. Firefighter iL. Pest controller ii. Medical lab technician or technologist b) Research one of the professions. Poster requirements: a) Minimum paper 8% by 11 inches b) Written information: answers to following questions c) Visuals should be relevant, neat, organized, and include some colour d) Title included on the front of the poster
Task 4: Earth and space science – Earth’s dynamic climate (25 marks) Requirements of the written speech: a) Introductory statement, body of speech (paragraph form). concluding statement b) May be written in first person Approximately 250 words You are representing your school at the next Earth Summit and you are required to write a speech to represent the youth of Canada. The Earth Summit is a United Nations conference with the purpose of stopping destruction of natural resources that cannot be replaced. The individuals involved with the Earth Summit are finding ways to reduce pollution. The main focus of your speech should be on climate change. Here are some questions to consider while preparing your speech a) What are some of the factors that are changing our climate? (e.g. greenhouse gases) b) What evidence do we have of climate change? c) What has been done recently to protect our environment? d) What are some of the things we can do to decrease the effects of climate change in the future?
