the subject: comparative health systems Video assignment #1 The Uninsured: 44 Million Forgotten Americans The Uninsured: 44 Million Forgotten Americans This is part of a series of video health care topics moderated by Hedrick Smith . Ted Kennedy’s desire for national health insurance was to deal with this issue. Some of these issues [but definitely not all] have been addressed in part by the Affordable Care Act. There were approximately 41million uninsured American in 2013. In 2013, 61% of uninsured adults said the main reason they were uninsured was because the cost was too high or they lost their job [or had their hours cut]. In 2014 due in part [with great debate on accuracy] that number has lowered….there are still at least an estimated 30 million without coverage. And not all of the gains in health care coverage was directly due to the Obamacare. A significant part of the improvement is due to new coverage provided by employers. This is noted by reductions in national unemployment rates. The video you are being asked to view was produced well before the ACA was a glint in the President’s eye but given that we have over 30 million Americans without insurance….the issues remain. After reviewing the Smith video, please respond effectively to the following questions. Some responses will require outside investigations [i.e….not just the video] 1. What are the common demographic characteristics of Americas uninsured population? Provide specifics. 2. What factors have led to their numbers continually increasing? 3. Discuss why the number of uninsured actually add to the overall cost of health care? 4. What is the current status of the CHIP program? What are some of the reasons for the limited number of people actually signing up for these benefits? 5. What is the TENNCare program? How is funding for this program maintained and in doing so, what other problems have been generated? 6. What is the status [financial stability] of TENNCare currently? [NOTE: this is not from video…you need to do some investigation!!] What are the key problems in the system today? 7. Do you think the criticism leveled against President Obama’s “Affordable Care Act” is based on real issues or is it merely political? Please explain. Your reflection should be between 2-3 pages. here is the video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBBLKZKEGBM&list=PLL1M6q7CIeJHKOHsdJr-GUosEX6XyjJL_&index=2&t=0s course text : Comparative Health Systems: Global Perspectives.
