Staples’ reading, we are introduced to various issues pertaining to influence that stereotypes and representation have on identity. As they make clear, the persistence of stereotyping can affect various aspects of identity such as gender, sex, race, ethnicity, and culture. His arguments also introduce various “truths” about society such as the ease with which stereotypes are accepted or attached to a particular group of people.​​For this essay, choose Staples’ work “Black Men and Public Space” and, in a well-organized, thesis-driven essay, examine and make an argument about the effects of stereotypes on society and/or the individual. You may consider also, the effects of appropriate representation to respond to this topic. In addition, you must find at least two secondary sources to support your claim. You may use personal experience in your essay, but this will not qualify as one of your secondary sources. This essay, like the previous ones, must acknowledge differing opinions. You must also write this essay for an audience that you must convince. As such, be mindful of what rhetorical devices you implement so that you might bring awareness to and persuade this audience to see your point of view.
