He examines the way media has changed over the last 500 years; particularly he focuses on the way humans are no longer just consumers of information, but that they have shifted to the role of “amateur” producers.He writes: “In a world where media is global, social, ubiquitous and cheap, in a world of media where the former audience are now increasingly full participants, in that world, media is less and less often about crafting a single message to be consumed by individuals. It is more and more often a way of creating an environment for convening and supporting groups.”In “Connected, But Alone?” Sherry Turkle makes many claims that this new media and technological environment may have a negative impact on our ability to connect and empathize with one another. Nicholas Carr in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” also laments the impact that the new technological environment is having on our ability to read deeply.
