What steps could be taken and policies enacted to deescalate women’s incarceration and to keep more women out of jail and prison?

For this assignment you will submit an Outline of your Essay 3. The outline should include a thesis, three topic sentences, evidence (a quotation or paraphrase of an exact line from the book and/or article) to support each topic sentence, and a counter-argument. Please label each of your sentences using this format: Thesis: Topic Sentence 1: Evidence for Topic Sentence 1: Topic Sentence 2: Evidence for Topic Sentence 2: Topic Sentence 3: Evidence for Topic Sentence 3: Counter-argument (and include where you think you’ll put it in the essay – intro, body paragraph, conclusion?): Recently you’ve read Chapter 12 in Just Mercy focusing on the plight of incarcerated women, and you’ve read Wendy Sawyer’s “The Gender Divide: Tracking Women’s State Prison Growth.” You’ve also watched the PBS News Hour clip, “American prisons are hell. For women, they’re even worse.” It’s clear from these sources that the incarceration of women is different from the incarceration of men, and that women’s prison numbers have been skyrocketing in recent years while the number of men in prison nationwide has been falling. According to the readings and in your own opinion, what steps could be taken and policies enacted to deescalate women’s incarceration and to keep more women out of jail and prison? In Essay 3, you should include what “they say” by providing brief summary in your intro paragraph of whatever sources you use in your essay (book, article or news clip), and also by using one piece of direct evidence (paraphrase or direct quotation) in every body paragraph, surrounded by an Evidence Sandwich. Keep in mind that you should never use any outside research in this class. Think about Ch 5, “And Yet,” in They Say, I Say, and, if it fits, try to incorporate how to move “from what they say to what you say without confusing readers about who is saying what” (68). And one last requirement: you must incorporate a counter-argument into the essay in one of your paragraphs. REQUIREMENTS: Introduction Paragraph: Overview: introduce the essay’s topic Summary: sum up the book, article and/or news clip Thesis: present the main idea and makes a strong argument Body Paragraphs: Topic sentence: make a strong argument to support the thesis Reasons: further explain your topic sentence and argument Context: explain what’s happening in the text so the evidence makes sense Evidence: a quotation or paraphrase of an exact line from the text, with correct signal phrase and citation Restate: repeat the evidence in your own words to make sure it’s clear Connect: tie the evidence back to your argument Ending sentence: tie it all back to the larger picture Counter-argument: one paragraph (probably a body paragraph although it could be the intro or conclusion as well) should contain a counter-argument and refutation. Conclusion Paragraph: Wrap up: restate the key arguments (thesis and topic sentences) of the essay Concluding thought: final thoughts that dig deeper, show why it’s important Grammar, Language, and Formatting: Grammar: sentences should be free of fragments, run-ons, comma splices, and subject-verb agreement errors. Few other errors should be present. Language: language should be strong and engaging and include strong vocabulary Works Cited: a Works Cited page should be included at the end of your essay.
