I will check uploads before class, 10/29, and invite you to lead discussion on your song. If you agree to lead discussion, you will receive extra credit points. If you do not choose to lead, you will not be penalized.
The sooner you start on your notes, the more likely you will be to get your selection of songs. Only one student should write notes on any particular song.
Your notes should include all of the elements of SPIDER analysis as we have been using them in discussion:
Scenario: What is happening in the narrative? Who is in the scene? Who speaks? What part of the story develops here?
Purpose: What is the dramatic purpose of the song? What theme, character, conflict, or idea is developed? Include all of these as appropriate.
Imagery: Look for similes, metaphors, personification, and other word pictures. Is an important image which is repeated elsewhere in other songs included here? Is a particular metaphor used differently?
Diction: Look for word play, allusions, associations with other songs or texts (books, historical or other echoes). Is the song more or less formal than others?
Economy: Count lines, speakers, repetition of refrains, and motifs which appear elsewhere. How is the song set up? Are there LOTS of words and rhymes?
Rhyme and rhythm: What words and ideas are stressed through the rhyme and rhythm? What effects do the rhymes and rhythms have?
