ASSIGNMENT: Choose 15 Quality Children’s books READ the 15 quality children’s books and as you are reading prepare an annotated booklist using the following guidelines. List your books in “topic groups”. Topics might include: Culture, special needs, families (include heterosexual, gay, lesbian, single family, grandparents, transgender, adoptive etc.) award winners, academic, or celebrations to name a few. You must have at least four (4) “topic groups” with at least 4 books in each topic. VARIETY, VARIETY, VARIETY. The Wake Tech LRC (Learning Resource Center) has a very nice collection of children’s books. Check it out. Or use the public library. They both have great collections and excellent librarians who can assist you.
Do not rely on books you search and find online. Sit and read the actual paper book! Annotated Book List must include: Title Author Illustrator Publisher and copyright date Age Level child the for which the book is appropriate Genre (fiction, nonfiction, concept etc.) Award received and date – if received 1 – 3 sentence personal (do not copy from Amazon) comment (reminder of the book’s content). Extension: Idea for other uses of the book in another center after the first reading in the classroom. For example: art extensions, outdoor extensions, math extensions, sand and water extensions etc. Rating: you decide the scale –stars, happy faces etc. The key for your rating scale should be on your cover page. Answer the following questions: What would children like about this book? Is this book more appropriate for younger preschoolers or older preschoolers? WHY? What could children learn through this book? How does this book promote the children’s language and literacy skills? Does this book reflect diversity and/or promote inclusion? If yes, how? Would you include this book in your Library Area? Support your answer with concepts in the textbook and content in Blackboard or shared in class.
