Uncategorized Assignment-helpRead the selection from William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation, 87-90 and then read Nathaniel Hawthorne’s tale, “The May-Pole of Merry Mount,” 678-685, which is loosely based on the material in the Bradford selection. At the beginning of “The May-Pole of Merry-Mount,” Hawthorne’s narrator says that “jollity and gloom were contending for an empire.” In other words, the conflict between the people at Merry-Mount and the Puritan people was a conflict between two feelings, jollity and gloom. Whichever feeling was the winner would reign over an empire—presumably the future United States. So: 1) Which feeling and which side wins? 2) How does the story/the narrator want you to feel about that outcome, and why? 3) How do you yourself feel about that outcome? Provide textual evidence for 1 and 2, and thoughtful reasoning for 3.
