Discussion Board # 1 Why are things such as privileged information and confidentiality important as virtues in representing a company? Answer this discussion in a detailed response using the book. Then respond to Josephs comment… As it says in our reading, one is bound to have access to information about their employer that the company’s competitors might find valuable. One’s ability to responsibly guard this privileged information is of tremendous importance in terms of the ability of the company to function. A company must instill and reinforce in its employees the importance of confidentiality. And individual employees must recognize their considerable responsibility in this area. The importance of keeping the proverbial secret recipe a secret is obvious. A company’s competitors want this information to gain a competitive edge. This highlights why it is important for companies to strive to ensure that their employees are satisfied and feel appreciated. A disgruntled employee who also has access to sensitive information is a liability, to say the least. Another sense in which confidentiality is important is when dealing with the information of the company’s clients. Customers of just about any business expect the business to respect their privacy. Even if a company is providing a competitive product at a competitive price, it will have a great deal of difficulty attracting and maintaining clients if it develops a reputation of violating client confidentiality. And, the ability of the company as a whole to maintain confidentiality is only as good as its weakest employee. Discussion Board # 2 Think about the whole idea of Whistle Blowing in a company? What would be some important issues or things that would motivate you to become a whistle blower in a company and why? Respond to the discussion in a detailed way using the book. The respond to Josephs comment.. I think I would become a “whistle blower” if I became aware of someone taking advantage of the company or customers. This could range from something as simple as an individual stealing time (manipulating their time card to create the illusion that they had worked more then they really had) to something like charging customers for more than they were receiving. Another situation that would cause me to blow whistles would be something that exposes the company to some risk. For example, i work in a dentists office, if I found out that the dentists were engaged in a complicated scheme of insurance fraud then I would blow the whistle on that. Even though they would not be stealing from the company per se, nor would they be stealing from the patients, they would be exposing the company to any number of risks. Since I consider myself a part of the company for which I work, I take these things very seriously. I think that becoming a whistle blower demonstrates individual agency as a representative of the company as a whole. It is not possible for the head of any organization of any considerable size to be intimately familiar with the day-to-day workings of the entire company. As such, each employee really is an appendage of the company as a whole. Not only receiving direction from above, but also sending information back up. Be sure to separate the discussion answers 1 and 2 and the responses 1 and 2. I don’t want any confusing work back I don’t want to have to send back for revision!
