Why is Reconstruction America’s “unfinished revolution?”

GENERAL INFO:
Each essay should develop a clear thesis and offer evidence from all relevant assigned readings and the lecture PowerPoints (I added a file for you to see it). Outside research is not needed for this assignment, so DO NOT include outside sources in the essay. A works cited page is also NOT required for this assignment. You must also incorporate one direct quotation from “Give me Liberty” into each paragraph of your essay, not including the conclusion.

ESSAY QUESTION
A few weeks back, we discussed the major social and political fault lines of Reconstruction—the contentious and violent period that followed the Civil War. You can incorporate some of that material into this question, but this question demands that you step back and assess why Reconstruction remains an “unfinished revolution.” What was Reconstruction and why was it defined by pronounced levels of social and political strife? Just as important, in what ways are we still fighting battles over the Civil War and Reconstruction?

MAIN REQUIREMENTS
The purpose of this assignment is to answer the essay question above by doing each of the following:
1. Develop a coherent, well organized essay that includes a clear argument (i.e. thesis statement) that directly responds to the question of your choice;
2. Illustrate a clear understanding of the topic of your choice;
3. Provide detailed descriptions and analysis of SPECIFIC historical details (i.e. developments, events,
people, etc.) that are significant, relevant, or otherwise illustrative of the topic of your choice;
4. Incorporate one direct quotation in each paragraph except the conclusion. (2 from powerpoint and 2 from Give me Liberty if possible)

All quotations should include MLA-style parenthetical citations—the author’s last name and the page number from which the quotation is taken inside parentheses—at the end of the sentence where the quotation is given. Again, a works cited page is NOT needed for this assignment.

STRUCTURE OF PAPER
Your analytical paper should be roughly five paragraphs long.
Paragraph one should introduce your topic and include a clear thesis statement that answers one of the three essay questions above.
Paragraph two should develop your thesis by describing one or more significant, relevant, or otherwise illustrative historical details.
Paragraph three should further develop your thesis by describing one or more additional (but different) significant, relevant, or otherwise illustrative historical details.
Paragraph four should develop your thesis even further by describing one or more additional (but different) significant, relevant, or otherwise illustrative historical details.
Paragraph five should end the essay with a short conclusion.

The only two sources you need is the book “Give me Liberty” by Eric Foner (6th edition vol. 2) chapter 16 America’s Gilded Age… and the powerpoint I added in files.
