This usually occurs at 48 hours or more and is caused by microorganisms entering the lower respiratory trach and lungs. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, ventilator associated pneumonia is a preventable complication. When such preventable complications occur in the hospital it creates a big financial burden because they are not reimbursed for the care associated with the infection. Ventilator associated pneumonia can also increases hospital stays up to 11 days on average. Although ventilator associated pneumonia is a big challenge within the acute care setting, it is preventable by use of VAP bundles which includes mouth care with certain solutions multiple times a day, head elevation, sedation breaks, peptic ulcer prevention, proper hand hygiene and more. These patients are at high risk for complications and poor outcomes, including death. Proper education and training along with correct use of protocols to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia will be effective in reducing such infections, hospital length of stays, overall patient outcomes, and save money.PICOT Question: For intubated patients in the ICU, will twice daily oral care with chlorhexidine gluconate compared to hydrogen peroxide solution reduce the incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia over a 12 month period?
