The purpose is to investigate the wording, syntax, structure, format, and platform of a text to help understand the rhetorical situation (writer/creator, audience, and need) as well as rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and context that help shape that text. The goal is to understand what the writer/creator wants and how they shape their text to persuade their readers toward their goal. Then, you will write up that analysis to a different audience, in memo format, so that they can understand what you found.Directions:•Locate a text that you would like to analyze (think: What is important to my major, (Homeland Security). Think about it in terms of your major, Homeland Security. It can be a report, an email, a web page, a picture, a video, a tweet, snap, facebook post, billboard, lit review, piece of nonfiction, etc. It can be anything that has a writer/creator and an audience.•Develop an analysis of that text focused on the items within the description.•Write a memo to me, complete with memo format and headings/subheadings, that describe the text you are analyzing, the facets that lead to that analysis (see Description), and an overall significance of that analysis. Dig deeper and explore the platform in which the text is distributed and why that may be significant to its audience(s). •Integrate pictures, quotes, or bits of text into your analysis memo to help me (your memo audience) understand your analysis better.•Include either link to the text you are analyzing, screen shot, or other format-accessible doc.
